Shot in the Dark

Chicago harbors many scars for Orr Academy’s basketball team. There’s the abandoned house where Tyquone’s friends were murdered, the corner where Coach Lou was shot, and the alley where Marquise was arrested for gun possession. Tyquone seeks refuge between the lines of the basketball court. With Coach Lou as his guide, their eyes are set on a championship. But Tyquone wants more, and grapples with dreams bigger than Chicago can offer.

NYTimes Critic Pick: “a documentary that has the rhythm of some spare yet deeply felt street poetry…Attentive viewing is required, and rewarded…(the film) gives us tough truths on the screen, while knowing there’s still more under the surface.”

“This isn’t some feel-good documentary about glory on the court. It’s about survival. Shot in the Dark does well to remember that sobering fact throughout its lean run time…It’s a vital, intimate snapshot of a handful of people who have been touched by gun and gang violence.”

- Village Voice

“Shot in the Dark has deeper roots than just basketball, and it’s more than just a sports movie with real-life stakes.”

- Rogerebert.com

“Shot in the Dark is a sobering reminder...THAT Chicago [is] more than sensationalistic national headlines”
